Hardcore Crystal Ball: HEEL Edge
Blogging about pro wrestling? Don’t mind if I do. Welcome to the first Hardcore Crystal Ball. And yes, I still call it pro wrestling. Calling it sports entertainment is cute & all, but I prefer the term I grew up on. I’m going to try & make this a weekly blog to supplement my awesome podcast (the Empire Hardcore Podcast, heard of it? No, seriously, have you heard of it?). Usually at some point during the podcast we play fantasy booker & try to figure out if the WWE writers are giving us clues as to future story lines & angles. So I figured I’d utilize the written word, elaborate on those theories, & return to blogging. Some of you out there might remember my columns from the past. One was Midcard Madness which was on several wrestling websites during my college days. More recently I had a MMA themed column over at 411Mania.com called The Verbal Submission. Apparently, MMA fans don’t like a lot of humor/sarcasm when talking about the wonderful world of the UFC. Who knew?!? So I’m not entirely new at blogging about wrestling, but we’ll see just how rusty I am.
My biggest complaint about the Smackdown brand has been the lack of established main event heels. Edge & Rey Mysterio have been towing that line for the better part of the year now. The fruits of their labor seem to be Alberto Del Rio’s (a.k.a. Spanish JBL) meteoric rise to Wrestlemania main eventer. That’s all sunshine & rainbows, but the problem for me is that Edge as a top babyface is garbage. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Edgehead (are they still called Edgeheads?). After watching Edge’s career from Day 1, his best work is undoubtedly as a heel & that heel work is even more splendid when he has an evil female counterpart.
With the always sparkly Christian returning to Smackdown, seemingly at Edge’s side, the door appears ready to be opened for another run as a top heel for Edge. Here comes the fantasy booking!!! Edge drops the title at Mania to Spanish JBL at Mania after some interference from Spanish Howard Finkel, and some botched interference from Christian. Edge holds his shit together, but he’s not thrilled with his 5 second pose brother. Then at Backlash, the wheels really come off the DeLorean, as Edge fails to regain the title, completely blames Christian, and the split is on. Christian is then pushed into the top babyface role and we have a menage a trouble with Edge, Spanish JBL, and Captain Charisma Carpenter all vying for the gold.
Sound good??? I also wouldn’t be completely opposed to sticking a woman like Kelly Kelly with Edge. Her career is laughable at this point with no real accomplishments in the squared circle. Pairing her with the Rated R Superstar could give her some quick tips into developing an evil big breasted persona. Plus, wedging a woman in between two best friends feuding over a World Title is a can’t miss. ALSO! This would be a prime opportunity to elevate Drew McIntyre, who appears to have some interest in Kelly Squared, to the next level. Drew’s time as a heel has garnered him a big fat bowl of nothing. Playing up the fact that Drew is responsible for Beefie Guerrero’s departure should garner him some face love. Plus, I can see Drew developing into an intense, Randy Orton-ish type face on Smackdown. Just a mean mugging ass kicker that don’t take no shit from anyone. This would allow heel Edge to feud with face Drew, while face Christian tackles the second hispanic coming of John Bradshaw LayDouche.
